There are two ways a company arrives at stablecoin payments.
The first is to build the whole stack around stablecoins from the start. Treasury sits in digital dollars, settlement runs on-chain, and the fiat conversion happens only at the edges. The second is to start as a card or bank-rail payments company, build a large business on those rails, and later add a stablecoin layer on top of it.
The industry likes to frame this as native versus bolt-on, and it usually does so to flatter whichever side the writer is selling. The honest version is more useful, and more interesting. The architecture genuinely matters for cost and speed. But the lines are blurrier than the pitch decks suggest, and the biggest cost advantage often lives somewhere most comparisons skip over entirely.
Here is what the data actually shows.
First, an honest baseline: how big is this really
If you only read headlines, you would think stablecoins have already overtaken Visa. Raw on-chain numbers are enormous. Total annualized stablecoin transaction volume ran around $35 trillion in 2025.
That number is close to meaningless for payments. In a February 2026 analysis, McKinsey and Artemis Analytics stripped out trading, internal transfers, and automated smart-contract loops and found that only about $390 billion of that volume was genuine end-user payments. That is roughly 1 percent of the raw figure. Visa reached the same conclusion from a different direction: its own onchain analytics dashboard, built with Allium Labs, has consistently found that the large majority of raw stablecoin transfer volume comes from bots and automated activity rather than real people sending money.
So the real payments market is far smaller than the hype. That is the part worth being honest about. The part worth being excited about is where the real money is going. Of that $390 billion in genuine payments, business-to-business transactions made up about $226 billion, roughly 58 percent of the total, and that segment grew 733 percent year over year. Payroll and remittances added another $90 billion. Card-linked spending, the consumer-facing piece everyone talks about, was only $4.5 billion.
The takeaway: the real, durable stablecoin payments market in 2026 is overwhelmingly a business cross-border story, not a consumer one. That is the corridor where both native players and incumbents are now competing hardest, because it is the corridor where the cost math is most painful on the old rails.
Where the cost difference actually comes from
Start with the thing stablecoins are supposed to beat. According to the World Bank's Remittance Prices Worldwide data, the global average cost of sending money across borders was 6.36 percent as of Q3 2025. The UN target is 3 percent, and the world has spent a decade failing to reach it. Bank-to-bank transfers, the channel most relevant to business payments, tend to run materially higher than that global average, often into double digits on harder corridors.
Now the part that gets oversold. On the actual settlement leg, a stablecoin transfer is close to free and close to instant. Moving USDC across a low-fee chain costs a fraction of a cent and confirms in seconds. Compared to a wire that costs tens of dollars and takes one to three business days, that looks like a 99 percent cost cut.
It is not, and this is the single most important thing to understand about the whole category. The blockchain transfer is the cheap part. The expensive part is the on-ramp and the off-ramp: converting local fiat into stablecoin at the start, and converting stablecoin back into local fiat at the destination. As Polygon's own explainer puts it plainly, stablecoin flows cut cost significantly on the settlement leg, but total cost still depends on on/off-ramp fees and local cash-out infrastructure.
That changes the comparison completely. The real cost of a stablecoin payment is set by:
- The conversion margin on the way in
- The conversion margin and local payout cost on the way out
- The depth of liquidity in the destination currency
This is why a blanket "save 4 to 7 percent" claim is true in some corridors and false in others. Sending dollars to euros through deep, cheap rails saves you very little, because the old rails are already cheap there. Sending dollars to a thin-liquidity currency in Latin America, Africa, or parts of Southeast Asia is where the saving becomes large and real, because that is exactly where traditional remittance costs sit at 8, 10, or 12 percent.
And here is where native architecture starts to matter for cost, not just speed.
What native architecture actually buys you
A company built natively on stablecoin rails tends to win on cost for structural reasons, not magic.
It holds treasury in stablecoins rather than pre-funding nostro accounts in every destination market. Pre-funding is one of the quiet, enormous costs of traditional cross-border payments: capital sits trapped in dozens of local bank accounts so payouts can clear. Settling natively in digital dollars frees that working capital, and that saving can be passed through as lower pricing.
It owns more of the on-ramp and off-ramp stack, or partners deliberately for it, rather than treating conversion as an afterthought. Since the ramps are where the real cost lives, controlling them is the difference between capturing the saving and leaking it.
It integrates as a single rail. A business plugs in once and can collect, hold, convert, and pay out, instead of stitching together a card processor, an FX provider, and a banking partner. Bridge, the native company Stripe later acquired, became known as "the Stripe of stablecoins" precisely because it collapsed that complexity into one API.
It prices transparently per payout, because the underlying settlement cost is knowable and flat, rather than buried in an FX spread the customer never sees.
It runs 24/7. There is no cutoff time, no weekend, no correspondent bank holiday. For a treasury team running payouts across time zones, that is a genuine operational gain, not a slogan.
None of this requires the native company to be cleverer than the incumbent. It comes from not carrying the assumptions of card networks and correspondent banking inside the product.
The bolt-on reality, and why it is stronger than the pitch admits
Here is where most native-versus-incumbent arguments get lazy, so it is worth pushing back.
The cleanest example is also the most awkward for the native camp: Stripe, the largest payments company to move into stablecoins, did not build its rail from scratch. It bought Bridge for $1.1 billion in late 2024, the largest acquisition in its history, and completed the deal in early 2025. Bridge was a native player. So the biggest "bolt-on" in the market is running on acquired native infrastructure, now powering Stablecoin Financial Accounts across more than 100 countries. The architectural distinction did not disappear. Stripe just paid $1.1 billion to acquire it rather than build it.
PayPal took a different route, issuing its own stablecoin, PYUSD, through Paxos, and has since expanded it to 70 markets for cross-border transfers. Visa and Mastercard have built settlement layers that let third-party stablecoins flow through their existing networks.
What incumbents bring is not technical elegance. It is breadth and trust. They hold money-transmission and banking licenses across dozens of jurisdictions, which is slow, expensive, and genuinely hard to replicate. They have existing relationships with banks, merchants, and millions of businesses, which means distribution a startup cannot match. And they carry brand trust that matters enormously when you are asking a CFO to route real money through a new rail.
The honest trade-off is this. An incumbent's stablecoin layer is often wrapped around legacy assumptions, which can mean worse pricing, slower innovation, and a conversion experience bolted onto card-era plumbing. But its compliance footprint and distribution are things a native player has to spend years building. Neither side wins on every axis.
Performance: speed is the clearest, least disputed win
If cost is corridor-dependent and complicated, speed is not. This is the most defensible claim in the entire category.
A traditional cross-border wire settles in one to three business days and stops on weekends and holidays. A stablecoin settlement clears in seconds and runs continuously. Independent analysis cited by accounting firm Crowe put a representative wire at roughly $55 and four days, against a stablecoin settlement of about 12 seconds for under 25 cents on the settlement leg. Even allowing for ramp costs at both ends, the speed difference is structural and does not depend on the corridor.
Speed is not the whole performance picture, though. Payout reliability, success rates into thin-liquidity currencies, and the quality of local cash-out all vary by provider and by destination, and this is where breadth of local integration matters more than which camp a company started in. A native company with shallow coverage in a given country can underperform an incumbent with deep local rails there, and the reverse is just as true. Settlement speed is a property of the rail. Payout reliability is a property of the network you have built on top of it.
So what actually decides it
Strip away the positioning and the comparison comes down to a few concrete factors.

Native architecture wins when your payments live in stablecoin end to end, when you operate in expensive corridors, and when freed-up treasury and transparent pricing translate directly into a lower all-in cost. That is the B2B cross-border lane, which is also the fastest-growing real segment of the entire market.
Bolt-on wins when you need maximum geographic and regulatory breadth, when you already sit inside an incumbent's ecosystem, or when your corridors are cheap enough that the old rails are not actually hurting you.
The mistake is treating the label as the answer. "Native" is not automatically cheaper, and "bolt-on" is not automatically slow. What matters is who controls the ramps, who has freed their treasury from pre-funding, who has built real local liquidity where you actually pay people, and whether the cost saving on your specific corridors is large or rounding-error small.
